Biography of Sean R. Walters, CAE

Sean began serving Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA®) as executive director/CEO on March 1, 2010, and was hired as the association’s deputy executive director in June 2007. As chief executive officer, he is responsible for implementing IMCA’s mission to deliver the premier investment consulting and wealth management credentials and world-class education. He works closely with the volunteer board of directors to set policy for the organization and the certification committee to develop and enforce standards for more than 6,000 Certified Investment Management AnalystSM (CIMA®) certificants and 300 Certified Private Wealth AdvisorSM (CPWA®) designees. He has been active in association management for 19 years, the past 13 as a senior executive within financial services associations.

Prior to joining IMCA, Sean was managing director of the knowledge and market development group for the Financial Planning Association (FPA). His responsibilities at FPA included corporate sales and publications, meetings and learning, research, business development, and community development. One of his contributions at FPA was to lead staff and volunteers in a turn-around of their educational offerings, which saw declining corporate and individual participation between 2001 and 2003.

From 1997-2000 Sean was the director of member services for the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP). He designed and implemented marketing programs that helped grow association membership, and he oversaw international and chapter initiatives aimed at fostering relationships with more than 100 chapters and sister organizations around the world. He was part of the staff leadership team that implemented a merger in 2000 between the IAFP and the Institute of Certified Financial Planners to form the Financial Planning Association.

Sean is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a BA in History, and earned an MBA from the University of Indianapolis. He achieved the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives, and is a graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute of Organization Management.
